Interesting Facts About P.E.I.
- It was the 8th province to join Confederation, on the 1st day of July, 1873.
- Its 2008 Population stands at roughly 139,000.
- 94% of the population claims English as its mother-tongue, with French making up 4%, and other languages being spoken by the rest of the population.
- The Confederation Bridge linking P.E.I. to the mainland was officially opened in May of 1997; it takes 10 minutes to cross its 8-mile span across the Strait.
It is the 104th largest island in the world, and Canada's 23rd largest island. - Its Motto is: Parva sub ingenti
(Latin translated as: "The small protected by the great") - Of Canada's six primary time zones, P.E.I. is located in the Atlantic Time Zone (AST), which translates also to (UTC-4h).

The village of Mount Stewart is located in Queens County in the central portion of Prince Edward Island, southwest of Morell.
Town of Georgetown
Boasting a population of 693 (as of 2206), Georgetown is located at the mouth of the Brudenell River at Cardigan Bay in Kings County, Prince Edward Island.
Town of Montague
Located along the Montague River in what used to be known as Township Lots 52 and 59, this town lies approximately six miles upstream from Cardigan Bay, allowing for easy access by water to the Northumberland Strait and the Atlantic Ocean.
Town of Souris
Souris invites you to come and explore our unique town of 1,300 people. Located in Kings County at the eastern end of the Island, it is the gateway to the Magdalen Islands via the CTMA.

Located at St. Peters Bay, 1915 Greenwich Rd. (Rte 2). Bordering the Confederation Trail at the intersection of routes 313, 2 and 16; this Visitor Centre overlooks the mussel farms of St. Peters Bay. It is minutes away from Greenwich Dunes at P.E.I. National Park, and helpful staff are ready to answer your questions and help you plan a memorable visit. Open Daily June-Oct.
Trailside Cafe
Offers bike rentals, daily lunch and dinner service in the summer, and live local music in the Celtic or gospel genres; attracts some of the great performers from the region and beyond.

Basin Head Fisheries Museum
Off Rte 16, 12 km east of Souris. One of seven Museum and Heritage P.E.I. sites (ask about Heritage Passports), Basin Head Fisheries Museum is situated on a bluff overlooking the Northumberland Strait and the white "Singing Sands" beach. The story of P.E.I.'s inshore fishery is told through displays, exhibits and dioramas. Gift shop. Groups welcome. Open June to late Sept - admission charged.
Point Prim Lighthouse
On Rte 209, off TransCanada Hwy. Prince Edward Island's oldest lighthouse, built in 1845. Climb 80 feet above sea level for a magnificent view from this unique, round brick structure. Historical maritime displays and guided tours offered - open during July and August.
Wood Island Lighthouse and Interpretive Museum
Located off Rte 1 on the Lighthouse Rd. by the ferry terminal, one minute from the Visitor Information Centre. Daily guided and self-guided tours of the Rum Running, Burning/Phantom Ship, Northumberland Ferries, Light Keeper, Interpretive Lighthouse and Fisheries Rooms, etc. New for 2008, "Taste our History" program with daily food samplings from Gramma's recipes. Seaglass display. Experience a 360 view in the 54 feet top tower. Spectacular moonlight tours in July and August. Gift shop featuring Island artisans. Heritage award winner. Open June 8-Sept 6, 9:30 am-6 pm. Admission charged - last tour at 5:30 pm.
Cape Bear Lighthouse and Marconi Museum
Located off Rte 18, 20 minutes east of Wood Islands. Built in 1881, this four-storey structure overlooks the Northumberland Strait. The museum features artifacts of local community history and a replica of the Cape Bear Marconi Station, believed to be the first Canadian land station to receive distress signals from the Titanic. Craft shop and picnic area on premises; group and family rates available. Open mid-June to mid-Sept, daily, 10 am-6 pm. $3.50 adults, $2.50 seniors, $1.50 children 6-15 years, preschoolers free.
Panmure Island Lighthouse
62 Lighthouse Rd.Rte 347, off Rte 17. P.E.I.'s oldest wooden lighthouse. Climb to the lantern and view our beach (the Island's best-kept secret). Learn about lighthouse history plus some artifacts, local history, fishing, and farming. Gift shop. Open July-Aug, daily. June and Sept, part-time or by request; admission charged to climb tower.
Popular Supervised Beaches In Eastern P.E.I.
Red Point Provincial Park
Located on Rte 16 - 13 km east of Souris, 2 km west of Basin Head. Shelter, firepits, playgrounds; scheduled recreational activities for children in July and August. Open May 30-Sept 13.
Basin Head Provincial Park
Home of the Singing Sands: Located off route 16, east of the town of Souris, Basin Head Provincial Park is a day use park featuring a supervised white sand beach, play area, food on site, washroom and shower facilities. The park is also home to the Basin Head Fisheries Museum (see below), and is open from June 6 to September 14.
What exactly are the famous "Singing Sands" of Eastern P.E.I.?
Northeast of the town of Souris, there is a golden sand beach that 'sings' when you walk on it. Actually, the sound is a little more like a squeak, but it's distinctive and mysterious...Squeaking or whistling sand is found where quartz sand grains are very well rounded and highly spherical. P.E.I.'s Singing Sands can be found at Basin Head Beach - a must-see during your stay on the Island!
Prince Edward Island National Park of Canada / Greenwich Dunes
(includes Hiking Trails, an Interpretation Centre and a Beach Facility):
The Interpretation Centre is located in Prince Edward Island National Park, on Rte 313 (take Rte 2 to St. Peters, travel north on Rte 16 and turn west on Rte 313 towards Greenwich).Allow 45-60 minutes to fully enjoy everything in the centre. Self-guided interpretive trails and a supervised ocean beach facility (July to late August). On-site gift shop. Open mid-May to early Oct. Off-season please inquire. National Park entrance fees apply for all areas.
Confederation Trail
The Confederation Trail, Prince Edward Island's tip-to-tip shared-use cycling and walking trail, was developed on abandoned railway lines. It traverses into wetlands and hardwood groves, meandering through quaint villages and along sparkling rivers.
